Filter by “Made in India” Might Become the New Normal

Transparency Meets Self-Reliance

The Indian government is reportedly planning a regulation to force e-commerce platforms to introduce a “country-of-origin” filter, allowing users to explicitly see and sort products based on whether they are manufactured in India. This move is aligned with the broader Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) campaign, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing by giving Indian consumers the power to choose local products more easily.

However, the proposal is not without challenges. E-commerce companies will need to revamp their UI, manage complex supply-chain data, and verify country-of-origin claims, which could increase compliance costs. On the consumer side, there’s a risk of misuse or mislabelling. Nonetheless, if implemented well, this policy could be a game-changer driving both economic nationalism and industrial competitiveness.
