Handling Seized Explosives Turns Deadly
Tragedy Rocks Srinagar Security Hub
On 14 November 2025, a massive and tragic explosion occurred inside the Nowgam Police Station in the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, killing 9 people and injuring nearly 30 more, while forensic teams were examining over 300 kg of seized explosive materials. Wikipedia Authorities describe the blast as an “accidental detonation” of ammonium nitrate, potassium nitrate, and sulphur a powerful mix that had been confiscated during a prior investigation into a suspected white-collar terror module.

In response, the J&K government has announced compensation for the victims’ families, while an investigation team has been set up to assess structural damage and review standard operating procedures. The blast could also renew scrutiny on the system for managing seized materials, and push for stricter regulation and greater transparency in police custody and storage practices.
