Cities Evolve for the Future

Digital Utilities and Green Spaces Become Core Development Goals

The Smart City Mission has rolled out its next phase, approving development plans for 20 additional cities across India. These cities will receive advanced infrastructure upgrades including integrated traffic control systems, smart grids, underground utility tunnels, and sensor-based waste management solutions. The expansion indicates the government’s strong focus on sustainable and tech-enabled urban transformation.

A major highlight of this phase is the emphasis on digital utilities. Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices will be deployed across public infrastructure to monitor energy usage, detect leakages, and automate city services. Such technology will reduce maintenance costs, improve public safety, and ensure uninterrupted access to essential services.

Green infrastructure remains a top priority as well. The plan includes creating 200+ new urban parks, riverfront developments, cycling tracks, and shaded pedestrian zones to reduce pollution and improve quality of life. With rising concerns over climate change and heatwaves, the transition toward eco-friendly infrastructure is seen as a long-term necessity.

Experts say the Smart City Mission’s next wave will serve as a model for other fast-growing cities. By combining digital innovation with environmental responsibility, the program aims to build cities that are not only efficient but also resilient, inclusive, and future-ready for generations to come.
