First-Ever Structured LPG Contract With America
Fuel Security Takes a New Turn
India has signed its first structured LPG import deal with the United States, marking a significant diversification in the country’s energy sourcing strategy. The agreement includes the supply of around 2.2 million tonnes per year, strengthening long-term availability for domestic consumption.
This move reduces India’s heavy dependence on Middle Eastern suppliers, where price fluctuations and geo-political tensions often impact supply stability.

While U.S. LPG has a higher propane composition, experts say it supports cleaner burning and better performance in industrial applications.
However, the deal also comes with challenges, including higher freight costs and a more volatile pricing mechanism linked to Mont Belvieu benchmarks. Despite this, analysts believe the agreement will enhance India’s energy security and support its transition toward more reliable and diverse supply chains.
