Energy-Saving Innovation Hits the Streets

Lights That Think

Several Indian cities, including Pune and Surat, have begun installing smart streetlights equipped with weather-based sensors. These lights automatically adjust brightness during fog, rain, or low visibility conditions, and dim themselves when streets are empty—saving nearly 40% electricity.

Residents have already noticed brighter streets during bad weather and improved safety in low-lit areas. If successful, the model could be adopted across major Indian cities, marking a big step toward sustainability and smart-city infrastructure.
